the unbecoming of the nation's future

prologue

i was not supposed to say anything about the issue i got from a friend earlier today. she had informed me about the latest preparation for the barangay election scheduled today October 29, 2007. it was a local issue from the province. needless to say, i also had my fair share on same issue that took place 5 years ago. the very same election bout i was first introduced into!

the year that was 2002

it was a sunny afternoon when my classmate truned enemy approached me at the doorstep of our house. i was heading for church when i saw her eyes gleaming with joy at the sight of my face. i have been hiding for this bitch for a week. everytime she knocks on the door to ask for the GEisha, my siblings and parent would always say, "he's not around"! but i have no choice now! i was cornered by the four walls of our house..literally!

she was trying to convince me to join her ticket for the SK election from whence she aspired to be the chairman. to make the story short, i said yes though my mind were protesting!

campaign period came! i never thought politics would be this filthy! we were never trained to be good politicians nor voters were trained to become good citizens. instead we were conditioned about vote buying and the like. voters were kept in an old warehouse prior to the voting period to make sure they will not change their minds. they were given foods, drinks and amusements! and of course, a 500 peso bill to buy every vote! unfortunately, i won as a councilor! but chooses not to serve the populace! anyhow, they're already paid!

now, 2007

still the same! there was no change!
this time, the voters were brought to the nearby province in Iligan city. they were kept to have fun, dine and enjoy. and perhaps later before the indelible ink marks their fingers, those 132 heads may have pocketed a thousand bill!

epilogue

these events happened not once but twice. myself as the living witness!
the national hero once said, "the youth is the hope of our motherland". but it will forever remain a text. none as far as i know had ever justified that adage! the way i see it, young adults had been polluted at a young age! the perpetrators were the old ones of course!

sangguniang kabataan's purpose of giving a real training ground for young politicians had never been a good venue to practise public service! this in turn became a niche for avaricious individuals who aspires for office not due to imminent service but too feed their greed.

soon, these young adults who witnessed how they were treated as voters will surely follow what their superiors did! they will soon be corrupt and useless!

their minds were corrupted and soon they too will become corrupt!
